"Although we've supported over 5,000 participants, Populi's journey still feels like it has only just begun."

Populi's Story

Populi Solutions was established in February 2019 by James Weait, initially as a sole trader consultancy supporting the employment services and welfare sector. Having worked across the industry, from Employment Consultant through to executive leadership roles in both the UK and Australia, James had developed a deep understanding of the barriers many people face when trying to enter or re-enter the workforce.

Populi was founded on a simple idea: people with more complex barriers to employment deserve more thoughtful, tailored support.

In the early days, Populi pursued this mission indirectly. The business focused on service design, leadership coaching and diversification projects for employment service providers, helping organisations improve their programs and better support participants.

Everything changed eight months later. In October 2019, while attending a BoxFit class at a local gym, James noticed something powerful. The class was energising, engaging and accessible for people of all fitness levels. It sparked a question: What if exercise could be used as an icebreaker to engage employment service participants? What if, after raising endorphins and building confidence through movement, participants could then take part in vocational mental-health conversations grounded in cognitive behavioural techniques (CBT)?

The concept was simple but powerful: light boxing-based exercise to lift mood and engagement, followed by structured discussions that build mental resilience and job-readiness. More than cohorts later, the model has evolved into a suite of group allied-health interventions combining exercise with evidence-based mental health frameworks.

As Populi has grown, so has the range of programs designed to address the real-world barriers participants are facing.

In 2023 Populi added a Yoga option to the box-fit exercise (MATS) and, in 2024, Populi launched FEARLESS, a program combining self-defence training and mental health support for women. Originally commissioned by APM in Bendigo, the program quickly proved to be an incredibly powerful intervention, particularly for women who had experienced domestic violence, helping participants rebuild confidence, boundaries and personal safety.

That same year, Populi formally launched DISC4Jobs, a tool built on more than 50,000 hours of frontline employment services experience. DISC4Jobs helps Employment Consultants quickly understand the personality styles of participants and deliver tailored coaching strategies that improve engagement, communication and outcomes. The concept has since evolved into Personality Matters, supporting thousands of participants to better understand how their personality influences their thoughts, behaviours and career choices.

Populi continued to develop new programs in response to emerging needs identified in sessions with participants.

In 2025, several new initiatives were introduced:

  • RECHARGE, focusing on sleep hygiene, wellbeing and energy management, after poor sleep repeatedly emerged as a barrier to motivation and participation.

  • Conflict Compass, helping participants understand personality differences and navigate conflict more constructively.

  • iRL (In Real Life) one-to-one sessions, providing tailored support for individuals requiring deeper coaching and guidance.

  • The establishment of Populi’s Practitioner Advisory Board, strengthening the organisation’s clinical governance and ensuring programs remain grounded in best-practice therapeutic frameworks.

In 2026, Populi continues to expand its impact. New initiatives include:

  • BALANCE, a program addressing anxiety around finances and unhealthy money habit loops using cognitive behavioural approaches.

  • The launch of Populi's Employee Assistance Program (EAP) designed specifically for organisations working in the purpose-led and welfare sectors.

What began as a small consultancy has grown into an international multi-program allied health and employability organisation, delivering innovative services across Australia and internationally. Yet the core philosophy remains unchanged: When people feel stronger mentally, physically and emotionally, they are far better equipped to build the life and career they want.
